Is “relaxed tee” is a misnomer? While not as demoralizing as the infamous swimsuit search, finding the perfect relaxed-fitting tee can be a challenge. I’ve tried (and purchased) quite a few, so that I can bring you my favorites. No really, I’ve actually tried all of the tees below – I shop like it’s my job!
The H&M tee is a perfectly drapey, textured slub tee. I especially like this dusty rose color, which is a great alternative to white and it looks awesome paired with a fatigue, cargo skinny or a slouchy track pant. This Rag & Bone t-shirt is the absolute perfect fit – not too loose or too tight and just the right length. I absolutely LOVE the star print, which amps up the coolness of this key basic. I’m imagining this tee peeking out from under a black blazer – both work and weekend appropriate!
A short-waisted friend has finally found herself a t-shirt in this Madewell basic. And with so many fun colors and at a great price point, it’s time to stock up! While my fellow long-waisted friends absolutely love the Bobi tee’s fantastic length. To note; however, this tee is long (perfectly so) but not great for the petite and short-waisted gals mentioned previous.
This Style Mint find is my new favorite white tee. A great, soft material that is not completely sheer is extraordinary! It’s just long enough and the sleeves hit at the most perfect length, almost exactly between the shoulder and elbow. Plus the pocket adds just enough pizazz – cool but still “layer-able” under sweaters and light jackets. A grey t-shirt you ask? This Monrow shirt is my kid-friendly alternative to the quintessential white tee. It’s a classic neutral that pairs with everything yet less of a stain-risk for “jam hands.”
I have been coveting this Joie message tee for awhile. Message and graphic shirts continue to be a huge trend and I love both the message and the simplicity of this one. And, who doesn’t love a striped tee?? As always, nautical stripes are the perfect compliment to any spring look. I’m imagining this Splendid tee paired with colored denim or tucked-in to a floral-print maxi – tres chic!
Many of these tees can be found at Shopbop. Enjoy 25% off thru this Thursday, April 17th – enter code: inthefamily14 at checkout. Includes full-priced and sale items. Get your shop on!

I love the hunt. Most people hate it – having something in your mind’s eye, then searching for just-the-right item to enhance your wardrobe or the key to your perfect outfit. I, however, love the challenge. Probably because I love to shop and, mostly because my wardrobe is more “expansive” than others, I don’t feel a sense of panic, should I not find the perfect piece I am searching for.
There are several things I am currently on the hunt for, but we’ll reserve those items for future posts. This entry is dedicated to the perfectly classic jumpsuit that finally ended my search. This is the jumpsuit I ultimately wore to my sister’s baby shower last weekend.
Now, a jumpsuit can be tricky for any number of reasons, among them you don’t want to look like a mechanic…or a baby. The material and cut all factor into this. However, I am also extremely long waisted – so there’s that issue as well (I will spare you the details).
This jumpsuit is made from a beautiful crepe satin and crafted with a wonderful drop waist (perfect for alleviating the aforementioned concern). With a classic high-neck, a slim yet straight leg, pockets and an interesting split-back detail, it was a marriage made in heaven.
Bra: Free People
Now, if you read with any regularity, you know that accessories are my jam. This particular jumpsuit could work for any number of events with a few simple accessory changes. As you will note from this shot, I added a punch of color with a lace bandeau bra that peeks out from under the jumpsuit. And, particularly for the baby shower, I wanted to brighten up my otherwise dark look with a girlie, fun necklace.
I could have also added a punch of color with my choice in shoe but I simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity to wear my new cage sandal heels (this has been another search).

An out-take. This is what happens when your best friends take your pictures…and you drink champagne during your photo shoot! We figured, why not go for a complete ’80’s moment?!
Recently I was working with a friend to update and prepare her wardrobe for spring. There were several fall pieces that we kept in rotation because, when paired with lighter fabrics and brighter colors, they created perfect combinations for the transitional weather we experience as the earth continues to move closer to the sun.
Outfit #1: Boho Chic
Pair your burgundy jeans with a flowy tank, funky fringe booties and a long beaded necklace and you’re ready for “festival season” (can you believe the fashion industry created a “season” based on Coachella?!).
Outfit #2 : Brunch-Ready
Create a causal, weekend look, perfect for spring mornings at the farmer’s market, by layering a chambray shirt over a striped tank. Add a heeled sandal for just an ounce of sophistication.
Outfit #1: Black & White (with spots)
Break out the white jeans, but tie in your black blazer with a silk shirt that has both neutrals in the pattern. Add a slingback sandal and the look is polished, even with the distressed jeans.
Outfit #2: Cool Preppy
Mixing styles and textures can add interest to an outfit. Pair your blazer with a casual tee and cargo-pocket track pants, and you instantly elevate an otherwise casual look. Add fashion, slip-on sneakers for an extra cool touch.
Outfit#1: Edgy Sophisticate
Wear your favorite heeled booties with a tailored dress and bare legs (bring them out of hibernation!). Then add a little more funk with a hooded denim jacket and a graphic scarf.
Outfit #2: Laid-Back Cool
Ready to take-it-easy in the spring sunshine? Pair a slim-fit, boyfriend jean and cropped sweater with your classic bootie. Make sure to keep the rays off your face with a fun fedora.
What’s your favorite way to transition a fall staple into the spring rotation? Please keep your feedback coming…and thanks for reading!
